Since the 1980’s, a number of new activated sludge plant process configurations and variations have been designed and trialled, and in some cases adopted as successful alternatives for handling particular wastewater requirements. Some example of these include the R-D-N (with aerobic or anoxic R zone), D-R-D-N and R-AN-D-N processes, and Modified Johannesburg, Modified A/O, Step Feed Bio-P, Lethbridge and Paddo processes.
The Custom Process option enables an extended range of process configurations (including those listed above). Variations on standard processes included in SASSPro V2 (i.e. MLE, 2, 3, 4 and 5 stage Bardenpho’s, UCT, MUCT and Johannesburg) can also be configured. Carbon dosing inputs are also available if carbon dosing is enabled at the Plant Select Tab.
Note: For Custom and Step Feed AnOx plant options, anoxic and anaerobic reactors first subtract any utilization of RBCOD due to incoming oxygen before calculating denitrification and anaerobic processes.  Similarly, re-aeration zones are treated as aerobic processes in these two plant options if active substrate enters. The standard plant options assume no biomass growth, no oxygen demand and no nitrification in re-aeration zones due to the absence of active substrate.

Use the individual reactor status reports to optimize your process configuration.  Parameters impacting on optimum process operation will be shown in red.
For anoxic zones, optimize sizing and recycles to minimize incoming oxygen and fully utilize nitrate within the zone, noting the denitrification efficiency (high and slow rates).
For anaerobic zones, ensure incoming nitrate and oxygen is minimized, and optimize sizing and recycles for optimum use of RBCOD for phosphorus release in the aerobic zones.
